NEWS: They banned it fifty years ago. It is still going. Here is what it turned into.

An awards night on punk’s DIY terms. Only musicians vote, at The Musos, because “if you can’t play a note, you don’t get a vote”.

The recent Musos Awards: INDIE went off like this 100 Seconds On YouTube - The punks are coming. Three generations of talent from heritage names to key upcomers carrying the torch forward, in one room for one night only. Special surprises to be announced. 

Background

On 3rd December 1976, the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned and Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers were booked to open the Anarchy In The UK tour at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. It was billed as “A Punk Rock Evening”. Tickets were £1.25 in advance, £1.50 on the door. 

Two days earlier the Sex Pistols had appeared on Thames TV with Bill Grundy. By the morning of 3rd December, the country had decided punk was a public order problem. The Government’s vice chancellor, Dr Frank Thistlethwaite, banned the Norwich show on the grounds of protecting the safety and security of persons and property.

19 tour dates had been booked. 3 went ahead as planned: The tour eventually limped into life at Leeds Polytechnic on 6 December, with Caerphilly picketed by carol singers and Cleethorpes and Plymouth mopped up at the end of the month. The most famous punk tour in British history is mostly famous for not happening.

Thursday 3rd December 2026 is 50 years to the day since that banned gig.

Musos Awards: PUNK is hosted by John Robb, the perfect host. It's happening in a room that housed the last British performance Sid Vicious ever gave, in the borough that has been arguing about punk ever since.

The world now looks and acts differently, and so does the universal world of punk which never stops inspiring. The Musos Awards are using the power of the past to help propel the talent of the future, on the first night of the next 50 years of Punk.

There was so much warmth in the room for music industry icon, John Giddings and Musos Festival 2026, Isle of Wight.

 

There was a touching tribute to Mani of the Stone Roses/Primal Scream with a special Musos Award, collected on behalf of his family by Tim Burgess. Mani is the first musician to score a hat trick, winning at the 2002 and 2005 Musos Awards also.

The whole night was energised by the vibrant fizz of The Musos Awards being the annual gathering of the new rock n roll. Guitar led artists and the wider ecosystem of creators, influencers, sponsors, media and industry came out to play in support of music.

 

Anybody in attendance was invited to have fun on the Musos Green Carpet. It’s The Players’ Player Awards for everyday people - and some were still partying on Friday!

 

Founder, Mark ‘Abes’ Abery said “It was so satisfying that collectively, we were able to stage another triumphant event. The feedback is already beautiful and some serious momentum is building”

After last’s year’s first Musos Awards of this generation, the event has stepped up and out. It’s now partnered with Music Venue Trust – the perfect fit for the Player’s Player of awards ceremonies.

 

Votes are cast by musicians for musicians. “If you can’t play a note, you don’t get a vote”. The event is also run, presented and produced by fellow musicians.

Musicians, music fans, the entertainment industry and social media influencers come together at the original celebrity football tournament, Soccer Six. 

The Soccer SixFest stage soundtracks the day with widely tipped live performances on the Soccer SixFest stage. This includes A.R.T., Sweet Unrest, Tres Kings, The Outers, Southern Heights, Snowdrop and more - some who are already festival favourites (performances / DJs 1-8pm)

Good sports and good times for good causes. 

It’s the thirtieth anniversary of the famous Britpop match (Pulp, Blur, Oasis, The Bluetones, Dodgy, Gene, Robbie Williams etc). What better way to celebrate that heritage than to support, connect and promote rising guitar bands who are part of this next generation. 

Venue packers such as The Clause, The Now, Lock-In and The Assist are back - who will be in a winning team again?

Can rock icons, The Darkness take home the trophy again before they are special guests of (fellow Soccer Six alumni, Iron Maiden, at Knebworth) the following weekend. 

Will the rock n roll rumble between Musos Awards stars, A.R.T. and Sweet Unrest, get resolved? 

Who will be the fastest man or woman in pop on the race track? All will be revealed on Sunday. Hosted by the also fast rising presenter/DJ etc., Louise Schofield.

It’s also an England team football anniversary (World Cup is on after Soccer Six ends so some of the people won’t be getting much sleep after as the pubs stay open).

A unique cultural heritage of Tower Hamlets, Music Industry Soccer Six Fest is where the true spirits of football, rock n roll and community unite informally - all the beautiful games!

This virtual artists garden party meets sports day is the next date on the road trip from The Musos Awards 2026, Everybody's invited to the rock n goal day out at Smile End on Sunday. E3 is the magic number.

Glimpse of a SOCCER SIXFEST day!

Soccer SixFest connects new talent with a brilliant day out - as well as with their musical peers and the industry.

Here's a taste of their Soccer Six Squad picture story of the day.

Each band gets to play at least a few games as they battle it out on the football pitch to reach the next stage of the tournament.

Saturday 10th May 2025

An hour before the gates open, the bands and industry have arrived to get into their individually chosen kit colours, ready for the tournament to begin.

2025 was the year that The Musos Awards had returned in Spring, so by Summer, Soccer SixFest felt like many indie rock bands and music industry were on a party tour. Later that year, The Camden Cup would return to launch Musos 2026!

With a focus on mixing up and coming new names with familiar independent rock music artists, labels, promoters etc, Soccer SixFest is at it's buzziest - since the early days of Britpop bands this event comes loaded with good natured good sports for good causes and good times.

New music tips begin a day of football in the caged pitches at an all dayer with simultaneous live music, fan selfies and an informal industry social.

(THE CHALAMETS). Alongside THE ONE OFFS they are some of the many Players who experienced a day to remember in London's East End.

The bands as well as the creators go from strength to strength. 

Michalina Kaluzna (a self-taught photographer with a background in fine art, music, and 3D design) was on a day tripper diary with the The Chamalets and The One Offs.

It's not easy to photograph sports in action, but her documenting from 10th May 2025 is superb.

These images - found recently on a drive (with much appreciation!) are the perfect way to prepare for the return to Tower Hamlets in Eastenders land, on Sunday 5th July 2026.

Made it from the cages to the Main Pitches - Back Of The Net!

It's Soccer Six so the 30th anniversary events are a game of two halves.

The first one is of the pioneering event began in 1995. 30th Anniversary first half!

This year - the second half - was when bands returned and Britpop was even bigger news. Pulp, Robbie Williams, The Bluetones, Dodgy, Reef and more are still going strong. 

Here's wishing that the next generations of bands who have joined the Soccer Six family, can have their songs heard decades later, too.

The Britpop tournament is a landmark event. Blur and Oasis fans on twitter coined the name "Liamon" in reference to the many 1996 images of Liam Gallagher and Damon Albarn defining the height of Britpop. Soccer Six friend, Andy Ross, a co-founder, would have loved this.

2026 is not to be missed.

All Soccer SixFest bands are stars on and off the football pitch and the music stage. DJs and live sets soundtrack the day.

Congratulations are in order!

Like the results on the day, the weather is unpredictable but the sun (and the talents) really shone that day - as did the entire event. The feedback was heavenly. Let's do it all again.
